How to Roll a Busy Two-Laner, WITHOUT Really Trying

1) Move TOWARD the double-yellow, AWAY from the motorist's blind spot on the right side;
2) Wave motorists through on the right;
3) Quit impersonating the 'MO in spandex. Be VISIBLE!

Joe, THANKS a million for holding the v-cam! Suckaaaaaaaaaa!

How to be a Jerk, WITHOUT Really Trying

On the way back from the bus station, I stopped at the local QT for a sandwich and drink. There was NO bike parking. I could have simply leaned my bike against the outer wall. There was plenty of space. But, what the hell? I simply squatted a car parking space, to deny some other jerk the spot. I hope QT is taking NOTES on How to do Bike Parking, WITHOUT Really Trying.

Next time, I'm bringing a lawn chair to do a REAL parking spot squat.

NO Road Tax!

The price of oil has surged to another record high. It is now selling for over $138 a barrel and high gas prices continue to fuel problems for Green Country drivers.

The News On 6's Chris Wright reports some are even choosing to abandon their cars. With gas prices now averaging $3.74 a gallon in Tulsa, driving is simply no longer an option for some people.

Local towing services say that unfortunately, business is booming.

Until recently, when Michael Townshend went out on a call, it was usually because someone had a flat tire or had been involved in a fender-bender. But these days, it's often to pick up an abandoned car.

"We get a call to come tow the car because they can't afford to put gas in their car," said Michael Townshend of Allied Trucking.

The cars then end up on the lot at Jim Rice's Allied Towing. Some of the cars are in perfectly good condition; they just recently ran out of fuel.

Rice says because the owners can't afford gas, they definitely can't afford to pay several hundred dollars to get their vehicles out of impound.

"It breaks your heart, you want to help them, but we have a fixed overhead going out picking these cars up, so we have to charge them what the state requires us to charge," said Rice.

The phone is ringing off the hook these days at Allied, but it's not just the unfortunate who are stranded.

Rice says some drivers are even taking advantage of their AAA membership and opting for a free tow over paying to fill up.

"They get way out to Bartlesville or somewhere and figure I can get my car towed back and don't have to buy the gas, and some of them can't buy the gas," said Rice.

As drivers continue to struggle to fuel up, Rice expects his lot to keep filling up.

"It's just the times we live in, and it's not good and we're all having to deal with it," said Rice.

Rice claims Allied is not exactly benefiting from all the new business. He says that's because his fuel costs have doubled in the past six months.

How to Get Revenge on Roadway Bullies, Without Really Trying

Bicycle drivers get a lot of crap initiated by motorists. The general motoring public, cops, and the courts are generally ignorant of bicycle rights. But, the vast majority of motorists and cops leave bicycle drivers alone, unless, of course, the bicyclist is impersonating Santa.

Every now and then, motorists turn into roadway bullies against bicycle drivers otherwise minding his own business of going from point A to point B. So, what to do?

Read carefully. I'm about to tell you stuff you need to know. The stuff NO LCI, licensed cycling instructor, will tell.

A very common bullying tactic motorists use is the mean honk and the hard pass. Here's what to do to get some revenge:

1) Note the make, model, and color of vehicle;
2) If you catch the bully at the red, casually roll right up to the driver;
3) Slowly lower your face and look at the bully directly in the eye;
4) Stick tongue out.

Problem SOLVED. Works great every time. If the driver rolls down the window in a good mood, ask for a dollar. For your troubles.

A less common bullying tactic is the motorist stopping in the middle of the road to duke it out with you. Usually it's because he saw you flipping the bird at him. The idiot deserved it. Don't feel bad. But, you still need to react.

I actually love angry motorists who are so boiling mad enough to get out of their vehicles to do battle. LOVE it. LOVE it.

First of all, once the idiot gets out of his vehicle, the fight is pretty much OVER, in YOUR favor. You, my two-wheeled friend, are now in charge. You are faster. He's the pedestrian.

Put traffic between you and the bully, before you wreck his day with rude gestures toward your crotch. If the man is so mad that he forgets to yield to oncoming traffic and gets nailed, oh well.

There are some motorists who don't get out. But, they still insist on bullying. Bicycles are more manuverable than motor vehicles. Use that fact to your advantage. Pick a gap in the oncoming traffic in the opposite direction. Make a U-turn, going the opposite way. Or hop onto the sidewalk, going the opposite way. You get the idea.

How to drive a bicycle on the expressway, without really dying

It is possible to manage the risks of driving bicycles on high-speed expressways. In Oklahoma, it is also legal, unless there's a sign posted prohibiting bicycles. I usually drive on the Broken Arrow Expressway to go Downtown, or eastbound to Coweta.

Even though bicycles are allowed to take a lane legally, I usually roll on the shoulder. On-ramps are not much of a problem to cross, when going straight. Motorists getting on the expressway are looking for trouble before mixing in with the traffic. So, what's another bicycle crossing the on-ramp. All you have to do is check your rear-view mirror first. Flip a final look-see off your right shoulder for safe gaps, and cross.

It's the off-ramps that need some attention to details:

1) Anticipate off-ramps at least a quarter-mile out;
2) On the approach, stick your left arm out to slow traffic;
3) Check rear view mirror for safe gaps, before making the cross.
4) Give a thumbs-up and a wave-out to the motorists exiting behind you.

Exit ramps have speed limits. It's your job to encourage motorists to obey the law by slowing them down. When the exit ramp has two lanes, get into the right lane and cross. Works great every time.

Advertiser Spotlight: Love Your Job. Join TPD dot COM

Do you want to make MILLIONS? Do you want EASY cash to cover your ENORMOUS Christmas credit card bills? Then, go ROB a BANK! Or, maybe roll BATMobile. Naaaaaaaah.

If you have a rap sheet, or even THINKING about GETTING a rap sheet, then, JOIN TPD DOT COM is NOT for you. Tulsa Police Department is definitely NOT for the faint of heart.

There are murders to solve. Rapists and sex offenders to catch. And, God FORBID, chasing down the silly Santa on Memorial during RUSH.

Yes, there's probably enough blood, failed possibilities, and heartache to go around. But, on a few occasions, there are probably opportunities to let loose your inner SUPER hero. Not too many jobs can boast the thrill of getting shot at by the drunken, outta control, reckless bad guy in a stolen Hummer who takes the whole squad on a wild and crazy 100 mph chase on Memorial late at night.

Hey, how about taking some down-his-luck kid Christmas shopping, without getting the third-degree?

AND, you will get to stalk the Santa in the middle of JULY, while tooling around in a pretty snazzy Dodge! Can't beat THAT.

Bike Billboards is proud to announce our newest advertiser! Bienvenidos, amigos! Through generous contributions from concerned citizens who want to see more bike cops, BATMobile will be rolling JOIN TPD DOT COM on Tulsa streets!

We are working with a sign vendor to get nice signs. The quote for 24"X48" coroplast sign, as shown, is $52 plus tax. The new signs will be SPIFFIER, SPORTIER, and overall pretty KEWL. We also have some pretty good Photoshop geeks and OVER-the-TOP copywriters on board! Bike Billboards SAY it BETTER!

Some pretty kewl graphic that'll BLOW the lid off Tulsa's advertising community. Hey, Tulsa Addy Awards, here comes Bike Billboards! Watch yer SIX.

Your kind and generous donation through PayPal will pay for newer signs and also help defray the cost of TAMALES.

Since the cheap help left the State, the price of TAMALES have gone through the ROOF. BATMobile don't roll too well without TAMALES, ya know. Every four-hour, 40 mile, shift burns 4 TAMALES.

Share The Road Campaign

Share The Road Campaign is ON! As public service, Bike Billboards has been rolling Share The Road signs on the back, the most desirable ad position. All other signs ride on the sides. As motorists encounter BB directly in front of them, the signs can't be missed!

Help me out, people. Since the cheap labor left the state, hot tamales DON'T come cheap. Whydon'tcha guys pitch in at least 5 bucks through PayPal to keep the signs rolling?
